Once a nymph in the service of the Greek goddess Artemis and the closest friend of Mrs. Claus (then an unmarried nymph herself, known as Alba), Callisto was tricked into an amorous encounter with Zeus (who was disguised as her mistress), and was unfairly transformed by Artemis into a bear as a punishment for stepping out. Forced by hunters to wander ever northward, it was she who introduced Mrs. Claus to the magical forests of the North Pole, where she lives with her cub, Arcas.
