Gauchito Gil
$10.00
One of the SchweizerCraft "Companions of Christmas" series (#XmasF 22)
Forced into the Argentine army as a teenager, Gauchito Gil proved himself an adept horseman, cattle wrangler, and sharpshooter, and when his term of service was over he intended to settle down to the peaceful and solitary life of a gaucho (cowboy). But when he was again conscripted, Gil deserted and became an outlaw, robbing from wealthy landlords and corrupt government officials and giving the money and resources back to the poor people of Corrientes, Argentina, from whom it had been wrested to satisfy the whims of the powerful, ensuring that no one he encountered went hungry.
Captured in 1878, Guachito Gil called out to God from the scaffold, praying for the chance still intercede on behalf of the poor and oppressed after his execution. God, who had been moved by Gil’s acts of charity, granted the wish, and now Gauchito Gil listens to the requests of his people each winter and does what he can to see them fulfilled.
